Change of Level (additional programs)

8 C.F.R.214.2(f)(5)(ii)

An F-1 student is admitted to the United States to complete a specific educational program. If a student decides to complete an additional program to the one originally intended at the same school, he or she may do so by complying with the following requirements.
A change of level does not require government adjudication.

Requirements

The student must have been maintaining valid F-1 status during his or her prior program.
The student must qualify for a new form I-20 to pursue the new educational program by submitting a letter of admission and updated financial documentation.

Issuance of New Form I-20 for Change of Level

The student must notify the ISO of his or her intent to pursue an additional program.
The student must have been maintaining valid F-1 status during his or her prior program.
The student must submit a letter of admission to the new program and updated financial documentation.

The ISO will prepare a new I-20 reflecting the new program information, new financial information, and new program end-date after the current semester completion date or the date of program completion if earlier than the established academic cycle, provided that the student will enroll in the new program at the next available semester.

Effective Date of New Program
The change of level to an additional program is effective when the student registers in courses for the new program and the ISO notifies SEVIS of the student's enrollment.
