International Services Office Policy
Full Course of Study Requirements (F-1)
8 C.F.R. 214.2 (f)(6)(i)
Federal regulations [8 C.F.R. $ 214.2 (f)(5)] require international students in F-1 non-immigrant status to pursue a full course of study during every academic semester except during official school breaks including the annual summer vacation. A full course of study is defined as the following:
- General
A full course of study must lead to the attainment of a specific educational or professional objective.
- Graduate Study
An international graduate student in F-1 status must register for a minimum of 9 credit hours each semester in order to be considered as pursuing a full course of study.
An international graduate student in F-1 status who has completed all coursework, and who has a letter on file in the International Services Office from his/her advisor indicating such, may enroll in 1 to 9 credit hours (thesis/dissertation research) and will be considered as pursuing a full course of study.
In other limited circumstances, an international graduate student in F-1 status may enroll in fewer than 9 credit hours at the discretion and approval of the ISO and in consultation with the student's advisor. In these cases, the student must have a letter on file in the International Services Office from his/her advisor explaining the circumstances. Such students will be considered as pursuing a full course of study. NOTE: The form letter is not to be used in these circumstances.
- Undergraduate Study
An international undergraduate student in F-1 status must register for a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester in order to be considered as pursuing a full course of study.
An international undergraduate student in F-1 status who needs fewer credits to complete his or her program in the final semester of study, and who has a letter on file in the International Services Office from his/her advisor indicating such, may enroll in fewer than 12 credit hours and will be considered as pursuing a full course of study.
- Distance Education Programs
No more than the equivalent of one on-line/distance education class (3 credit hours) per semester may be counted towards the full course of study requirement.
